Today we started our measurement unit! First, we made a list of "Measuring Rules" that we follow when we measure the length with objects. We started today by measuring with nonstandard units, which means lining up objects to measure something instead of using a measurement tool. In this math unit we'll also practice estimating length, comparing length, analyzing if a measurement was taken correctly, and ordering objects by length. We also did two other math workshop activities: Thanks for popping in!

1. Special Kid next week is Luke! 2. Happy Birthday next week to Luke! My oh my, Luke, you're very special next week :) All through November we've been learning about gratitude. We were thinking of all the things/people we can be thankful for. We filled out Gratitude AlphaBoxes (sorry, forgot to snap a picture of these) to try and think of things, big and little, that we can be grateful for. We also learned a "Gratitude Song" and we thought about ways to show appreciation! We've FINALLY finished our first writing unit on personal narratives. We've been working so hard on our stories, let me tell you. You wouldn't believe how much thought and consideration students put into their stories, I'm so proud of them! Here are some things we learned about writing a personal narrative:
You can see, we've really been thinking about personal narratives. Today, we had our Writing Celebration (one of my favorite things to do!). Everyone got to read their story to the class. Then we had a special treat to celebrate our hard work! 1. No school November 25th-November 27th for Thanksgiving.
2. Scholastic Book Orders are due by November 25th. 3. Winter Break is December 21st-January 1st. 4. Please make sure to send your child with a warm coat, hats, gloves, and boots as the weather gets colder. It's helpful to put your name on the tag of these items. If you send winter boots, please also send a pair of shoes for them to change in to. I recommend keeping an extra pair of socks in their backpack. Any lost items might be found in the Lost & Found (just outside the stairs past the office). Take a moment to check the Lost & Found for anything that might be missing! 5. Happy Thanksgiving to you! I'm grateful that I get to spend my days with my students. They bring me joy and happiness! I hope you have a Thanksgiving that is surrounded by friends and family, there's nothing to be more grateful for! 1. Our Blue Ribbon Award Celebration is Friday, November 20th at 2:30pm. It's located in the New Life Auditorium. 2. No school November 25th-November 27th for Thanksgiving. 3. Scholastic Book Orders are due by November 25th. If you'd like to use these books as gifts, I can easily put them aside and get them to you without your child knowing. Just let me know, I'm always happy to find a way to make gifting books easier! 4. Please read the Time for Kids issue brought home each week with your child and use it to complete the last page of the homework packet. These are great conversation starters and a good time to practice thinking about information from nonfiction text. The magazine is yours to keep and enjoy! 5. Special Kid is Tyler! Our math curriculum is full of math games that students learn on a weekly basis. We've learned countless games so far and we practice them often during math time. Many of them focus on mental math and number sense skills. The math games below are a mixture of games from our curriculum and games I've found online. High RollerStudents roll the dice, re-roll the smaller number, and then find the sum. Those fancy dice are called "double dice". Students have to add the inner and outer dice together to find their number. It's an exciting way for them to get more addition practice in. Bunny HopFlash CardsOur simplest game, and yet a very popular one! I pick these up from the dollar store and have addition, subtraction, telling time, and counting coin versions. Number Grid PuzzlesAfter students put the puzzles together they practice counting forward and backwards by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. Beach BumpGreat practice for adding three numbers. Students roll three dice and place their color chip on the sum. If their partner rolls the same number, they can "bump" you off. They can also lock the space if they roll the same number twice. This is quickly becoming a class favorite! Doubles Slides-And-LaddersGreat practice for doubles facts, which students should have memorized by the end of first grade. Those are just a few of the games we play in math. I'll try to update again this year with more math games we play!
1. Thank you to those who have donated to our auction basket. The auction is this Friday, so our basket will be compiled this week. If you're still able to donate, please check the sign up sheet by clicking here. The auction is this Friday, November 13th from 6:30-11:00pm at Cobblestone Farms. 2. Now that we've been in school a few months, I'm reassessing student reading levels. This will tell me the kind of growth students have made. It gives me a good picture of their learning needs so we can adjust reading groups accordingly. It's such a pleasure listening to students read. I love seeing students decode words and think about books independently! First grade is the best grade to teach young readers, there's so much growth going on! 3. Our Blue Ribbon Award Celebration is Friday, November 20th at 2:30pm. It's located in the New Life Auditorium. 4. No school Wednesday, November 25th-Friday, November 27th for Thanksgiving. 4. Special Kid is Niku! This week we welcomed mealworms into our classroom, which we're studying in science. We observed the physical characteristics of a mealworm and also the mealworm's habitat! This week, we'll be following up with some investigations into the various needs of the mealworm...stay tuned! On Friday Mr. G invited us to see some exciting science with his class. It was great to get together with the other first grade class and observe science together!
1. THANK YOU to everyone who helped make our Halloween Party a fun and successful event! 2. The Student Barn Dance is this Friday from 6-8:30 at Angell! 3. There is a "Blue Jeans and Boots" spirit day on Friday. Wear blue jeans, cowboy boots, plaid shirts, cowboy hats....the options are endless! Students can buy a bandana during the morning hours on Nov. 4th-6th for $2.00 to wear. Feel free to have fun with it! 4. We're collecting cereal boxes (empty) for a craft we'll be doing next week. If you have any empty boxes (cereal, cracker, anything that is thin cardboard and colorful) please send them in this week! 5 Happy Birthday this week to Tahlia!
