2. Special Kid is Sophia!
1. Our Writing Celebration is June 9th at 2:45 pm! We'd love to have you there! Dress attire is encouraged. 2. Special Kid is Sophia! I have a ton of wonderful pictures that I still need to share with you! These are from our musical, the ACES walk to the Arb, our visit from students at the dentistry school, math workshop, and field day. First grade can be lots of fun!

1. No school Monday, May 30th!
2. Field day is this Thursday at 1:30 pm! Please wear comfortable clothing (great time for any athletic wear) and tennis shoes! 3. Book Exchange is this Wednesday. Please send in any gently used books you are no longer reading (there is a bin outside the office). Each student will get to choose a book to take home, if they'd like! 4. Our Writing Celebration is June 9th at 2:45 pm! We'd love to have you there! Dress attire is encouraged. 5. Special Kid is Liya! I thought I'd give you a peek into a science concept we've been learning about recently. We've been learning all about air. Specifically, we've been thinking about the following ideas:
To start, I showed students this plastic bottle with a balloon inside and asked them, "What do you think will happen when I try to blow up the balloon?" Students drew a model of their hypothesis in their science journals. Then, after much anticipation, I finally attempted to blow up the balloon. To our great surprise, the balloon would not inflate! We discussed what we were seeing, why it might happen, etc. Students eventually came to the conclusion that the balloon would not inflate because there was air in the bottle, so there was no room for it to inflate. Thinking about this, we used the items below and buckets of water to explore air bubbles. We had more discussions and experiences with air such as going outside to feel the wind, reading stories about air, etc. Finally, it was time for us to revise our thinking. I told students that scientists often need to revise, or change, their thinking after they observe something. We've observed air, and we can use our knowledge to explain why the balloon wouldn't inflate. So, we went back to our science journal and did a second model, one that reflected our new thinking. We used these student models to make a class model altogether. Then, we went back to revise our models a third time. Finally, and this was our favorite part, we used our knowledge about air to explain how this toy worked! Manuel noticed that his toy used air to make it move, so he brought it in for us to think about! It was loads of fun and a great way to apply our thinking about air!
1. Our class musical is this Thursday at 7:00pm! Students should arrive at 6:45 pm. Please send costumes in a bag tomorrow! Mrs. Ryan sent an email clarifying the schedule for our play. If you did not receive that email, please let me know asap so I can forward it to you! 2. Our ACES walk is this Friday! 3. The lost and found is really full. Please stop by and check for any lost items! 4. Special Kid is Taruni! It was so lovely out at recess the other day that I had to snap a few pictures. Leaves are finally back on the trees, blossoms are opening up, spring is here! We're loving it! 1. Class musical is May 19th at 7:00pm. Please send costumes in a bag by May 16th. 2. We're going on a field trip to the Leslie Science Center on May 13th from 12-2:30. We'll be traveling by bus. We're in need of a few parent chaperones to help! If you're available, please notify me by email. Thank you for all your help lately. We're so lucky to be able to go on these field trips! 3. Special Kid is Danny! Math GamesWe've been chugging along in math and working hard. Our current unit is geometry focused. Students have been learning about two and three-dimensional shapes. They've also been learning how to configure shapes together to make a new shape. In this game, both partners grabbed 4-6 of the same shape blocks. One partner secretly made their own configuration. Then, they had to describe how to make the same configuration to their partner. At the end, they revealed their shapes to see if they had a match! This was a great game because it encouraged students to use their math vocabulary. Students said things such as, "Take your triangle and put the vertices up" or, "Line the side of the trapezoid up with the side of the hexagon". Here is a simple game we played. Time Match. Students had to match the digital time to the analogue clock. An oldie but a goodie! We call this game "Piggy Bank". Students take turns spinning and collecting coins. If they land on the pig, they have to put everything back into the bank! They count their collection of coins. The person with the greater value of coins at the end is the winner! 1. We started our NWEA testing last week. We'll be finishing up our reading test and then doing our math test later in the week. I tell students to take their time and do their best! A good breakfast and lots of sleep also helps. 2. No SCHOOL this TUESDAY, May 3rd! 3. Class musical is May 19th and 7:00pm. Please send costumes in a bad by May 16th. 4. We're going on a field trip to the Leslie Science Center on May 13th from 12-2:30. We'll be traveling by bus. We're in need of a few parent chaperones to help! If you're available, please notify me by email. Thank you for all your help lately. We're so lucky to be able to go on these field trips! 5. Special Kid is Tahlia! On Friday we went to UMMA. We had a great time! Students were in groups of 5 and each walked around with a docent. They created a program for us that focused on weather in art, and on seeing themes of weather in Japanese kimono designs. |
