2. Special Kid is Ashley!
Recently in math we've been working on adding two digit numbers. This skill has helped us practice making change with coins and solve story problems. Here are some pictures!

1. International Night is this Thursday from 6:30-8:30! Please come by for our festivities, this is such a great event at Angell! We've been working hard all month to create displays, so please stop in! We're also in need of more volunteers, especially for the clean up. Click HERE if you can help. 2. Special Kid is Ashley! Recently in math we've been working on adding two digit numbers. This skill has helped us practice making change with coins and solve story problems. Here are some pictures! These are the different strategies we're using in class to help us add multi-digit numbers! We lined base-10 blocks up vertically to practice grouping tens and ones together when we add. We practice adding and subtracting 10 and 100 with this game. They spin to land on a number and then roll to find out how much they're adding or subtracting. This is just for fun... Addition and Subtraction Candy Land! Thank you to the Genisio's for donating the game at the beginning of the year!

This month students have been working with Mrs. Halabu's student teacher, Ms. Abro, for social studies! They've been learning all about maps, including using a compass rose and a grid! Today they played a map game, here are a few pictures to enjoy! We also read the final copy of our highly anticipated class book! We worked on this earlier this month, but I was waiting for our laminator to start working so I could finish it. Thankfully, someone (I'm not sure exactly who fixed it, perhaps an Angell? Wink!) fixed the laminator and we were back in business! We read the book I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato by Lauren Child. If you've never read it, we highly recommend it! It's very entertaining and the illustrations will pull you in! It's about a young girl (Lola) who is a very picky eater and won't eat anything. So her brother, Charlie, makes up fantastical stories about the food to lure Lola into trying them. He tells her that the mashed potatoes are actually "cloud fluff from the highest peak of Mt. Fuji" and that the peas are "green drops from Jupiter". Needless to say, these stories were enough to convince Lola and it turned out she loved all the food! We read the book with our author eyes to try and figure out what the author did to make this book so entertaining. We realized that the author used a few strategies. 1. She turned ordinary food into an imaginary adventure 2. She used illustrations with big pictures and bright colors. They covered the whole page. 3. She arranged her words in different shapes, instead of just a box of words at the top or bottom of the page. We set out to make our own page, and eventually our own class book. It's now in our class library, pop in if you ever want to read it! Here are some pictures I took along the way! Put your cursor over the pictures for the captions. Last but not least....ROCK TROLLS! On Friday Mrs. Risberg (Elsa's mom) came in to share some pictures about life in Sweden. She taught us some words in Swedish, we played "Color I-Spy" in Swedish, and we learned about rock trolls! The legend is that the rocks in the forests (which we learned are very common in Sweden) turn into trolls when no one is around. This slideshow has some extra pictures from our smorgasbord that Mrs. Halabu took! 1. No school this Monday, January 26th!
2. Thank you for sending in rocks, glue guns, markers, and other materials for our Swedish Rock Trolls. We'll be displaying many of the trolls during International Night (Feb. 5th)! 3. Special Kid is Maddie! Yesterday Mrs. Bullock's Kindergarteners came into our room to share their reading with us! They did a great job reading their stories! We were there to encourage them and the we helped the Kinders fill out rubrics. Today we made our Swedish cookies called Chokladbolls! We gathered with Mrs. Halabu's class in the cafeteria and made them together. Later, we came back together to have our Swedish smorgasbord. Here are some pictures of the cookie making! On the menu for our smorgasbord: -Swedish Meatballs with Cream Sauce -Lingonberry Preserves (Voted the Biggest Hit!) -Gooseberry Jam -Pepparkakor Cookies (Runner Up) -Dill Crackers -Herring in Mustard Sauce -Chokladboll Cookies Later, in science, we learned about how sound travels. We found that sound can travel through different mediums, but some materials transmit sound better than others. We used our pencils and ears to listen to sound as it traveled through materials around our room!
Don't forget that International Night is the evening of February 5th! IF you plan on participating in the Parade of Nations then you'll need to sign up before hand. https://docs.google.com/a/aaps.k12.mi.us/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiZN0nHtTDP8dFFkdDFNbEhqaG9TUDBtMVRkRXJGV1E&usp=sharing#gid=7 1. No school this Monday! Please take a moment on this day to have a conversation about our role in equality in America. We spent some time discussing equality in our class today, but my impact won't be as meaningful as a conversation with you! Sometimes we forget to talk about these things, or we give a quick response to questions. However, students are starting to ask more complex questions about the topic and this is a great time to start (or continue) the conversation! Ask your child about these three pictures: 2. Any library book that was checked out of the Ann Arbor District Library should be returned, if you haven't already done so. Thank you to Harmony for the reminder! 3. Please be sure to send in 3 medium size (fits in the palm of you hand) rocks from the gravel pit/a rock collection. We'll be using these when we learn about Swedish Tales with Mia Risberg (Ela's mom) next Friday. 4. Special Kid is Harmony! Last week we started our sound unit in science! Here's a peek at what we've done so far! We started by sharing what we think we know about sound. Then we learned two vocabulary words. Sound-Anything that can be heard by humans or other animals Source- The thing that makes a sound We did several "sound hunts" where we had to identify the sound, the source, and describe it! Yesterday, we learned a new vocabulary word. Vibration- A regular back and forth motion We learned that sound is made by vibrations. We did four different "Vibration Stations" to see if we could feel, hear, and see the vibrations. We also wanted to find out what happened we we started or stopped the vibration. When we finished, we went back to our science journal to record our thinking from the day! Hello and Happy New Year! It seems like it's been ages since we've had to think about our second grade classroom, but here we go! 1. No School on Monday, January 19th. 2. Our focus for International Night is Sweden! We'll be studying Sweden along with Mrs. Halabu's class. International Night is February 5th. 3. Scholastic orders are due to me this Friday (January 16th). 4. For the remainder of the year Mrs. Halabu will be teaching social studies and I'll be teaching science (just to switch things up a bit!). This month we'll be working on mapping skills and sound! 5. Happy Belated Birthday to Kendan, Qistina, and Maia who all celebrated their birthdays over our break! We sang to them early last week and Maia taught us a few stretching poses for her birthday! 6. Special Kid is Francisco! Some exciting news! Second grade is working with a U of M student to communicate with students in Uganda! We had a representative from a Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda come in and talk to us about life in Uganda. Some of her colleagues started a school there. We'll be sending the students information and pictures to help them learn English! Our class has already sent information on the four seasons and city animals. We're waiting to hear back from students in Uganda. More great news! Thank you to all the families who came out to help pass out our cards at the Glacier Hills Senior Living Community. It was such a wonderful experience and the smiles/tears/words of gratitude we received really made it a rewarding experience. Thank you again, to Delena Harrison for planning the outing! I only have a few pictures from the group that I was walking around with. As always, if you have any other pictures that you're willing to share please email them to me! |
