Last week we started our magnetism unit in science. Students started by exploring how magnets work with a "Magnet Scavenger Hunt". We'll be learning more about magnets throughout December!

1. Scholastics are due Friday, December 5th. If you order books for a gift let me know so I can get them to you without your child seeing. This order will be in before our holiday break. 2. No School this Wednesday-Friday due to Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving to you all! I know I'll be spending mine with my family and enjoying every second of it, especially the time I get to spend with grandparents and nieces/nephews! I hope you have time to spend with your family as well! 3. If your child is in need of an AAPL library card then please return the yellow sheet asap. Thank you! 4. Report cards come home on Monday. 5. No Special Kid next week due to the short week. Last week in science students learned about parts of the brain that activate senses. They looked at PET scans, which is a picture of a human brain taken by a very sensitive machine to show active parts of the brain in color. Then they tried foods that were new to many of them to think about reaction in their brains. They tried cornichons, coconut chips, fennel bulb, and roasted seaweed! Here are just a few pictures of our field trip to the UMS concert to see Jake Shimabukuro play the ukelele! 1. Our field trip to the UMS concert is this Wednesday, November 19th! We'll be traveling by bus in the morning to be back by lunchtime.
2. Please make sure to send hat, gloves, winter coat, and winter boots for the cold weather. It helps if you write your name inside of these items. It's also a good idea to keep an extra pair of socks in your backpack! 3. Report cards will be coming home on Monday, November 24th! 4. No School November 26th-28th. 5. On December 17th we'll be visiting the Ann Arbor Public Library. Students will get a tour of the building and they'll get a library card! Here are a few very important notes about that day.
6. We're in need of more glue sticks and black dry erase markers if you're able to help. Thank you! 7. Happy birthday this week to Maddie! 8. Special Kid is Joseph! Perfect timing! Just as we were ready to go out for afternoon recess the most beautiful snow started to fall! Boy oh boy was that exciting! I wish you could have heard our class celebrating! It was a good reminder to us all to start bringing boots (ones to change into so our class doesn't get all wet), hats, and gloves to school on these cold days. I also suggest keeping an extra pair of socks in your backpack, just in case!
Also, don't forget to put your name on the tag of your coat in case it gets lost! 1. Homework. The last three pages of hw this week should be used to practice math facts at home. You can tear those pages out, cut them, and keep them at home to practice every night. They do not need to be returned to me, only the first two pages! 2. Scholastic orders are due this Friday, November 14th! 3. If you'd like to come in on a Wednesday for our math time, please use this link! Wednesday help 1:30-2:30 4. We have a field trip to the Hill Auditorium to see a UMS concert on Wednesday, November 19th. 5. Our class started a gratitude wall outside our room. If you get a chance, stop in to read it. Feel free to add things you are grateful for! 6. Happy birthday next week to Zalie!
7. Special Kid is Naomi! We did a spooky experiment on Halloween with dry ice and soapy water! Today we talked about the importance of voting tomorrow, November 4th! Since we know voting day is tomorrow we decided to have our own voting session in class! First, we talked about how voters need to vote based on what a candidate does, not how a candidate looks. As one student pointed out, "You have to learn about who your voting for before you decide to vote for them." We read these two books to help us learn about our candidates! We talked about the good and bad qualities of both candidates before casting our own votes! Before casting our vote, we discussed how important it is to have a reason you're voting for someone. This also goes with our opinion unit that we're starting in writing.
We also talked about how voting is personal, and that it's okay if you vote for someone different than your family/friends! In the end the winner was.......GRACE! Grace had 16 votes and Duck had 6. Happy voting tomorrow! -Mrs. Brennan |
