Yesterday we made "Ghost Rockets" with our Reading Buddies (Mrs. Rudberg's Class). We used water, film canisters, and Alka-Seltzer tablets. We waited and waited until, POP, they went flying into the air! This went with our force and motion unit. When we were done, our reading buddies helped us record our thinking in our science journal! Last week we started our poetry journal. We'll work in our poetry journal once a week. We went outside to observe Fall before we read a Fall poem. This week our poem was about kindness (to go with our compassion theme for the month). Students practiced reading the poem and also wrote/drew their thinking. One more picture to make you smile!

1. Our Halloween Parade is this Friday at 2:30. Our class party is in our classroom afterwards! You're welcome to join us for both the parade and the party. Students who want to bring a costume should send it to school in a bag or in their backpack. Please wear normal clothes to school, we'll change into our costumes shortly before the parade. Costumes are not mandatory.
2. No school next Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 2nd and 3rd)! 3. Special Kid this week is Justin! (I made a mistake last week...sorry Justin!) 4. Many students have been using raz-kids since Wednesday! A BIG shout out to Alexander, Daniel, Jomanah, London, Luke, Manuel, and Sophia for acquiring more than an hour using the program! If you need help using raz-kids, please refer to this video I made: file:///Users/brennanm/Documents/RazKidsInstructionalVideo.swf 5. If you're able, please consider donating to our class Zingerman's Gift Basket. This will be used during the Blue Jeans and Boots Fundraiser (which you can also buy tickets for!). More information can be found by clicking here. Hello Parents,
Today students brought home an instructional letter from a website we'll be using in first grade called raz-kids. This is meant to provide online reading practice and can be used as independent reading time at home! The letter explains the website and also gives you your chid's unique password. I also made this instructional video for a reference if you'd like to take a look. We practiced logging in today, but it's going to take a little time. It would be great if students could become proficient in typing in our class website URL (www.angell-brennan.weebly.com) on their own. We use our website during our computer lab time on Wednesdays as a way to get to external sites. file:///Users/brennanm/Documents/RazKidsInstructionalVideo.swf Raz-kids is a great resource because it allows students to work at their own reading level. It builds confidence, fluency, and comprehension. Mr. Court has paid for an account for our class to use for the year. Please take advantage of this resource and use it often! 1. Picture Day is this Tuesday, October 20th! 2. If you have box tops, please send them in by October 23rd. 3. Our Halloween Parade is Friday, October 30th at 2:00pm. Please school appropriate costumes only. Our class party will follow the parade in our classroom. 4. Special Kid this week is Justin! On Friday we made applesauce with some apples we bought from the farmer's market! We practiced following directions from a recipe, writing a "how to" piece that gave directions for making the applesauce, and we learned about the life cycle of an apple! Earlier this week we went to the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market. We had such a wonderful time, thank you to everyone who helped! While we were there, we asked the farmers some questions. When we got back, we made a class salad and enjoyed it with bread! Click on the pictures to make them larger and to read some captions. On Monday, we practiced using thermometers to take the temperature. We felt cold, cool, and warm water. Then we measured the temperature of the water.
1. Picture Day is October 20th! 2. We'll be taking the city bus to the Farmer's Market this Wednesday. 3. If you have Box Tops, please send them in by October 23rd. 4. Our Halloween parade is October 30th. Only school appropriate costumes please, nothing gory or too scary. More information to come as we get closer. 5. Happy birthday this week to Liya and Niku! 6. Special Kid is Jomanah! This week we went on a fall walk to the Arboretum with the other first grade classes. Mr. G is our botany guy, he taught us all about milkweed plants, sassafras trees, white pine trees, and black cherry trees. Here are some pictures for you! 1. Due to some scheduling conflicts, our field trip to the Farmer's Market has been moved to Wednesday, October 14th. We'd still like to have two more parents who can join us. We'll be taking the bus (adults are responsible for their own bus fare). We'll be leaving shortly after 9 am and returning shortly before 12 pm. We've received a few dollars to use to buy some ingredients for a class salad (we'll make it after our trip). If you'd like to contribute, feel free to send in a few dollars to me. We'll pool this money together to use it for our salad. 2. This Wednesday is Count Day so please try to make sure your child is at school. This helps the school get funding from the state. 3. If you did not have a chance to sign up for conferences, please email me. Conference dates are Tuesday, Oct. 20th, Monday, Oct. 26th, and Thursday, Nov. 5th after school.
Every month we think about a different virtue to help build our classroom community. This month's virtue is compassion! We started by reading a story, Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell. We talked about how Molly Lou was always patient with others and how she always treating her classmates politely. Then, we got into groups to practice being compassionate when working together. Our fingers got a little gooey, but we had a great time. Here's what we did: We had a great discussion about using kind words as a way to show compassion. I'm looking forward to thinking more about this as we go further into October!
