This week we've been digging in to our writing, math, and reading work. In math, we've been memorizing sums of ten. Here we are playing a game called "Penny Plate". You take ten counters and hide some under the plate. Your partner has to tell you how many you hid! We're starting our personal narrative in writing. To help us think of a topic, we made heart maps. We fill our maps with the things we love! Then, when we aren't sure what to write about, we look at our heart map for ideas! We finally got to meet our Reading Buddies today! Our buddy class is Mrs. Rudberg. She teaches third grade. Today we compared ourselves to learn more about each other.

,Welcome back! I apologize for the week long hiatus our website had, but it will now be up and running full time! Here are a few important notes to be aware of: 1. No nuts or peanuts in the classroom please due to classroom allergies. This includes snack time. Please remind students so that they refrain from bringing any leftover lunch items that contain nuts into the classroom. 2. Curriculum Night is this Wednesday at 6:00 pm. Thank you for your flexibility and patience last week. I'm looking forward to meeting (or seeing) everyone and hope to provide you with adequate information about first grade. The event should be done by 6:30. 3. We'll be taking the city bus to the Farmer's Market on Wednesday, October 7th (rain day will be October 14th). We'll need a few adults with us to help manage students for this trip. Please email me if you're available! The trip is scheduled for the morning to allow for better timing. *** We'd like to purchase some ingredients at the Farmer's Market to be able to make a class salad. If you'd like to contribute, please send in some money for us to use. The school is paying for the bus ride. Thank you in advanced. 4. Thank you to everyone who has helped contribute to our class wish list. It means a great deal to me and I appreciate your generosity! 5. Happy birthday this week to Ali, Azura, and Sowa! In closing, I'd like to leave you with this image of my dapper friend. He looked so handsome that I had to snap a picture, it brought a smile to my face!
1. Fall Picnic is this Thursday from 6-8pm. 2. Behavior Chart. Now that we've been in first grade for a week, it's important for you to know about our class behavior chart. I'm not one to depend on changing student colors and usually I'll opt to have private conversation with a student or focus on something positive. That being said, we do have a behavior chart in case my reminders aren't helping students make a better choice. Students all start on green. If a student makes a bad choice, I'll give them a reminder or redirection. If a student continues to make that bad choice, I'll give them a warning. If student continues, they change their color to yellow. This is intended to be a clear indicator that they need to change their choice. If the student continues, they will change their color to red. This is when I would most likely contact you. If a student is going above and beyond and I just can't stop noticing what a wonderful student they are, they change their color to blue. This is an honor in our classroom. Stone changed his color to blue today, so if you see him make sure you congratulate him! 4. Volunteers. If you're interested in helping out at school or in our classroom, please let me know! Our library time is Tuesday from 1:30-2:30 and we'll need someone there to help check out books. I could also use some help with preparing materials for my classroom or helping during math time. I'd love to hear from you if you want to come in! My email is [email protected]. 5. Book boxes are due back Monday. 6. Happy birthday last week to Ahmed and this week to Alexander! I snapped some pictures this week when I had a chance. We were really busy getting to know one another and learning about life in first grade. Take a peek at our week! We cozied up with some books when we learned how to pick good fit books. We worked in groups to put some puzzles together. We had fun hanging out at recess with old friends and new! We used our math skills in a math game while practicing how to work with a partner. This game was called "Penny-and-Dice"...although we used counters instead of pennies! We also graphed our birthday data! This was good practice to remember our birthday and it will also go up on the wall in our classroom!
Hello and welcome to first grade! I'm ecstatic to be spending the year with your family. I absolutely love the history behind our school and the beautiful and unique surroundings. This is going to be fun!
In an effort to make communication more comfortable and eco-friendly, I'll be using this website as a source for class news. Instead of sending home a newsletter, I'll be updating this sight weekly (so be sure to check it often). For the first week, I'm sending home a paper copy of this letter. After that, class updates will all be on this page. Here are a few pieces of information that will help you through the year: 1. Curriculum night is September 21st at 6:15 (upper elementary at 6:50). This is a wonderful time to get a sneak peek into our classroom! It's also a great time to sign up for conferences. More information on dates/times for conferences will be available by September 21st. 2. Wednesday Envelope. Please complete all required paperwork and send back to school immediately. Keep an eye out for the Wednesday folder each week for school papers. 3. Homework. More information on our homework procedure will be coming home. The first week there's no homework. The blue folder should be used to transport homework and should be brought back to school each day. The blue folder will also transport any papers that are relevant to only our class, so make sure you peek at it a few times a week! 4. Snack. I'll provide snack for the first day of school. We will eat snack every day, please pack your child a healthy snack. We are asking for fruits and vegetables only for the first two weeks until we have comfortably identified any serious food allergies. I know it's difficult to always have healthy snack options on hand and I appreciate your efforts! It's so important that we work together to model healthy eating and food choices (although I do love my chocolate...). For more suggestions on snacks, please click on the snack tab. 5. Birthday Treats. I absolutely love birthdays and I want nothing more than to celebrate and appreciate my students on their special day! However, I'm asking that we do not have sweet treats for birthdays. Fruits and vegetables are allowed for birthday snacks if you’d like. You're also more than welcome to celebrate with our class in different ways, such as teaching us how to do something (last year our birthday students played keyboard for us, taught us yoga poses, and taught us words in new languages!). Thank you for your understanding and cooperation with this! 6. Pick Up. If your child's end of school routine is going to be different than usual, please send a note or email to notify us. If they are riding the bus with another student on a bus they typically don't ride, they need a hand-written note which will be signed by our secretary, Mrs. Fishwick. If you need to make last minute changes to your child's pick-up routine, please call the main office. Last minute emails may not be seen in time to tell your child about the change. Thank you! 7. Backpacks. Your child should have a backpack large enough to transport library books, artwork, the Wednesday Envelope, homework folder, etc. Please help your child get into the habit of bringing it every day and remembering to look inside the blue folder when they get home in case anything needs to be given to you! 8. Clothing. It is helpful if you label your child’s clothing, jacket, lunchbox, and backpack. The school lost and found grows quite quickly! Is your brain hurting yet? Sorry for all the information at once! I know the first week of school is just as hectic for you as it is for us, so I appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to get acquainted with our procedures. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me. I always try to check my email multiple times throughout the evening. This is going to be a wonderful year. Thank you for being part of the Angell community! Monica Brennan |
