All through November we've been learning about gratitude. We were thinking of all the things/people we can be thankful for. We filled out Gratitude AlphaBoxes (sorry, forgot to snap a picture of these) to try and think of things, big and little, that we can be grateful for. We also learned a "Gratitude Song" and we thought about ways to show appreciation!
We've FINALLY finished our first writing unit on personal narratives. We've been working so hard on our stories, let me tell you. You wouldn't believe how much thought and consideration students put into their stories, I'm so proud of them! Here are some things we learned about writing a personal narrative:
You can see, we've really been thinking about personal narratives. Today, we had our Writing Celebration (one of my favorite things to do!). Everyone got to read their story to the class. Then we had a special treat to celebrate our hard work!
- personal narratives should be a true story about something you did
- writing about a small moment is more interesting than writing about your entire day
- stretch out a word to spell it the best you can
- use a word list (we call them our "office) to spell common words correctly
- sequence a story from the beginning to the end (we practiced doing this on our fingers to give us five parts to our story)
- use transition words (In the beginning, next, after, last, etc.)
- don't just tell what happened, but describe how it made you feel
- reread to make sure there is punctuation at the end of sentences
