We've been thinking/talking about characters the last few weeks in second grade! Talking about characters is a great way for students to think critically about fiction stories. I used many of the ideas from this blog post.
We started by learning about character traits. Students learned new vocabulary words and worked to make a collaborative class book.

Then we turned it into a class book! Students can use this book whenever they need to help them remember our new vocabulary words!
There are so many ways to talk about characters when you're reading at home.
Think about....
Think about....
- Where is the character having strong feelings? Why?
- Did your character change or surprise you? How?
- What are the characters actions and what does that tell us about him/her?
- Why did the character do that? Would you have done that?
- Form opinions about characters, "In my opinion__________ because________..."
- Change your voice to sound like the character (if the character is frustrated, he/she should sound frustrated, etc.)
- What did your character learn? How can that help you? (Thinking about theme...)
